Democratic candidate for president Kamala Harris is promising to close the gender wage gap as part of her 2020 campaign platform. The former prosecutor will put the burden on employers to prove they're not discriminating against women, and levy a fine of 1% of profit on companies for every 1% difference in pay between men and women doing similar work. The money collected will fund an as-yet undefined paid family leave program.
Equal-pay advocates claim that the wage gap is the result of unconscious bias against women in the workplace.
We'll examine the forces that drive the wage gap, and discuss whether this plan will work, including a review of results achieved by European countries in their efforts to close their wage gap.
Spoiler alert: achieving equal pay for equal work is a lot more complex than most people may realize.
