Jo Swinson attacked over 'politcal arrogance'

Jo Swinson attacked over 'politcal arrogance' Members of the anti-Brexit party voted on Sunday at the Party Conference in Bournemouth to actively campaign for the revocation of Article 50 ahead of the next general election.

The new policy, which followed an earlier vow to deliver a second referendum on any deal agreed between the UK Government and the EU, caused outrage among Brexiteers in and outside of Westminster. And as Lib Dems leader Jo Swinson appeared on BBC Breakfast, host Dan Walker lambasted her on the new policy.

Mr Walker accused the Lib Dems leader of “political arrogance” as he asked Ms Swinson to justify her new policy to Brexit voters.

He said: “When you say to Brexiteers ’you didn’t know what you were voting for’ and accuse them of ignorance, that’s the height of political arrogance.”

Ms Swinson replied: “You’re putting words in my mouth there, I’m saying I disagree with them.

“I can respectfully disagree with them while still believing in the things that I stand for and arguing for what I think is going to be in the national interest.

“It’s entirely open, of course, to others to argue the opposite point.

“If we find ourselves in a general election in the next few weeks as many seem to think it’s likely, then I think it is important that those who are standing for elected office should be clear about what they would do to resolve Brexit.

“And as Liberal Democrats, we believe that our best future is as members of the European Union, that this Brexit has been a mess over the last three and a half years and that the best thing to do is to stop that chaos by revoking Article 50.

“And we said that if we get a majority Lib Dem Government we will then do what we have set out in the election campaign.”
