Nelson Eddy: Nearer My God To Thee

Nelson Eddy: Nearer My God To Thee Nelson Eddy, American Baritone (1901 - 1967) singing in four-part harmony from the Columbia masterwork collection HYMNS WE LOVE. Copyright 1945. Theodore Paxson, Eddy's long-time accompanist, is the organist. From the liner notes: Nelson Eddy is an ideal singer to present this collection of some of the most beloved hymns in the world. He sings with spirit and conviction and with the clarity of diction for which he is noted. Having Mr. Eddy sing all four parts is not presented here as a stunt or trick device....Mr. Eddy's multiple singing is well suited to interpreting the harmonies used in writing hymns.; for this reason, the decision was made to have Mr. Eddy sing all four voices himself. Liner notes by John Ball, Jr.

About this hymn: a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, which retells the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."
The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. This version by Nelson Eddy is featured on the 4 CD Titanic Soundtrack - Collector’s Anniversary Edition.
