Chinese military vehicles parked near HK border

Chinese military vehicles parked near HK border (1 Oct 2019) Large numbers of military vehicles were seen on Tuesday, massed in Shenzhen, near to the border with Hong Kong, as China's Communist Party celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Celebrations included a military parade that showcased its growing might and strategic ambitions.

Meanwhile, the landmark anniversary was viewed as the possible spur for increased unrest in Hong Kong, where many view Beijing as chipping away at the autonomy and freedoms Hong Kong was promised when the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Protests in Hong Kong have been ongoing since early June, when they started over a now-shelved extradition bill that activists say was an example of how those promises have been eroding.
