Colorado's First Licensed African-American Female Doctor

Colorado's First Licensed African-American Female Doctor Denverites are lately finding reasons to rediscover the life and legacy of Dr. Justina Ford, the city's first African-American female doctor.

Amid a drive to win $150,000 in funding for her historic home in the Five Points neighborhood, caretakers of the city's black history have been highlighting the ways in which Ford's work continues to impact Denver residents.

"Dr. Ford attended the delivery of over 7,000 babies (from) more than 37 different nationalities, and knew in the range of 8 to 11 languages and dialects," said Terri Gentry, a board member at the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center -- the institution that now occupies her house. "(She) served people all over this community for 50 years." Video by Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post
