The Ruy Lopez | Exchange Variation | Chess Openings | IM Andrey Ostrovskiy The Ruy Lopez is an incredibly popular opening at all levels of chess, from the amateur player up to top level grandmasters. It is considered as one of the best openings for white after the moves 1.e4 e5.

In the second video of the series, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you the Exchange Variation in the Ruy Lopez, also known as the Spanish Opening or Spanish Game. The main focus of this video is to show you the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different variations.

The Ruy Lopez opening is characterized by the following move order:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5

If black attacks the Spanish bishop on b5 with the move 3…a6, white has several options here.

The variation covered in this video is the so-called Exchanged Variation which arises after white's move 4.Bxc6.

After the exchange 4...dxc6 the variation continues as follows:
