In this step by step tutorial I cover how to make a website with WordPress.
Below are each of the steps with timestamps.
1) Choosing our hosting plan and a free domain name [2:43]
2) Installing WordPress [4:30]
3) Setting up our theme and content [7:30]
4) Edit the content with our builder [10:06]
Step 1: Getting hosting and our domain name:
In order to have our website live and, on the internet, we need hosting. Hosting allows our website to be displayed for the world to see 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. With good hosting companies like GreenGeeks you should experience almost no downtime during the year. Think of this as having a business that can be open even when your asleep!
There are many different hosting plans available, but the key things to be aware of here are that the Lite plan only allows for 1 domain name, while the Pro and Premium plans allow you to host an unlimited amount. Additionally, it’s worth noting that if you sign up with a longer plan term, you’ll receive a larger discount. I personally recommend signing up for at least a year because there is a 30-day money back guarantee.
Getting our free domain name:
Here is where you can register your domain name. GreenGeeks allows you to do this for free in the first year with the purchase of hosting! There are many different options out there, but I would recommend going with a .com domain name if it’s available. This is because it is the most common, and easiest for people to remember.
If you already own a domain name you have a couple options. You can transfer that domain name to GreenGeeks and get an additional year added on to your expiration date for free, or you can keep it where it is and change the nameservers to the one’s associated with GreenGeeks hosting package (the next step).
Step 2: Installing WordPress:
I chose to use WordPress because it is the most popular content management system for building websites in the world. If you get stuck when using it, you’ll always be able to find helpful resources online.
Installing WordPress might sound like a daunting technical task to a beginner, but it isn’t that bad. If you are really feeling uncomfortable you can always reach out to support for help. However, I go step by step through the setup process. If you follow along and remember your login information you should be fine!
Step 3: Installing our theme and demo content:
Here I decided to use the Astra theme. This is one of the most popular WordPress themes in the world, and it’s very easy to use. Astra also has great code in terms of the theme itself, and is very light weight, which helps your website to be quicker.
Another reason I chose Astra is because it comes with numerous free to use starter sites. In this step we import the demo content from one of their pre-made starter sites. By doing this we have a beautiful looking website in just minutes that we can use as our foundation.
Step 4: Editing our website content:
In this last step I go through editing the content on our website. Here I show how to make some edits with the built-in customizer that comes with the Astra theme as well as with Elementor.
Elementor is one of, if not the best WordPress builder on the market today. We use the free version of it and drag and drop different elements onto our website. Additionally, I go over how to change text, delete elements, add or change images, and more!
I hope this video helped you learn how to make a website. If you enjoyed it please give me a thumbs up!
