John Oliver and his team faced just that dilemma on Sunday night when it came time to discuss Donald Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—because back in 2017, Oliver and his team used the Watergate moniker—specifically, “Stupid Watergate”—to describe the president’s Russian-collusion scandal. (Yes, the Russian-collusion-inquiry saga began more than two years ago.) So what did Oliver and his team dub the Ukrainian fiasco? It’s apt, if a bit on the nose: “Stupid Watergate II: The Stupidest Watergate.” As Oliver explained, the firestorm this time is all centered around a phone call in which Trump pressured Zelensky eight times to investigate his potential presidential opponent Joe Biden. “Eight times!” Oliver said. “The only time it makes sense to ask for the same thing eight times in a single phone call is if you’re trying to connect with a customer-service agent for AT&T!” (AT&T owns HBO, and Oliver loves needling them from time to time.) “Boom! I got you, business daddy!” Oliver cheered. “I got you! You genuinely bad company.” “It’s frankly impressive just how thorough that abuse of power is,” Oliver added, noting that during the call Trump promised to get both Attorney General William Barr and his gab-happy lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, involved. “He’s looping in both someone so involved in government they should be nowhere near this kind of petty dirt, and someone so involved in petty dirt they should be nowhere near the government,” Oliver said. “Stupid Watergate II: The Stupidest Watergate” is just one of the many monikers Oliver and his writers considered; the list also included “Stupid Watergate II: Look Who’s Stupid Now (The Same Guy),” “S2pid Watergate,” and “STWOPid Watergate.” But the point remains the same, regardless of what this particular scandal is called: As Oliver noted, this controversy feels different from the others. “Perhaps the most shocking part of all this is it might actually hurt him,” Oliver said. “And I know you’re probably thinking right now, ‘No, it won’t, you fucking idiot! Nothing Trump does ever affects him.’ And I do get that. That has clearly been true—until, maybe, now.” Why are things different this time? Oliver argues that in this case, the public rage is higher and more widespread; an impeachment inquiry is already on the way; and Republicans seem to be playing things cautiously for a change. Plus, as Oliver pointed out, the Ukraine call just has a lot of elements Trump’s past offenses did not; unlike the meeting with Russians at Trump Tower, Oliver said, this time Trump was undeniably invol
