Ballon d’Or 2019: Fans all make same VAR joke as Liverpool’s Van Dijk misses out to Messi

Fans made the exact same joke about VAR after Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the sixth time.

Lionel Messi’s sixth Ballon d’Or award prompted the same VAR joke by various fans who claim the replay would have given Virgil van Dijk the prize. Messi was named the best male footballer in the world following a stunning year with Barcelona that saw him scoring a staggering 62 goals in 64 appearances.

However, a number of Premier League supporters took to Twitter where they joked that VAR overruled that decision and gave the award to Liverpool’s star defender Van Dijk instead.

One fan tweeted: “After consulting VAR, the ballon D'or has been awarded to Van Dijk the liVARpool defender.”
