Critically Endangered female Sumatran elephants find new home at Australia Zoo

Critically Endangered female Sumatran elephants find new home at Australia Zoo This is BIG news!

Australia Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of four Critically Endangered female Sumatran elephants as part of the Inter-regional Program for Sumatran Elephants. The Inter-regional Program for Sumatran Elephants works with zoological facilities to provide insurance populations maintaining long-term genetic and demographic integrity while supporting key education and conservation initiatives. In only the last 25 years, over 70% of Sumatran elephant habitat has been lost leading to less than 2,500 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild.

Australia Zoo has been supporting wild Sumatran elephant conservation for over 10 years, including working with other organisations to construct an elephant hospital as part of the Elephant Conservation Centre. The Elephant Conservation Centre has also received support from Australia Zoo in the form of a clean water supply for the staff and elephants, as well as a refurbishment of the staff living quarters.

Our four female Sumatran elephants, named Christina, Megawati, Widya, and Raflesia, are enjoying their own sanctuary with access to hundreds of acres to play and roam. We expect our beautiful elephants to be adventuring in their world-class Elephantasia by Easter 2020, complete with a huge swimming pool, fountain, plethora of plants, trees and grassland.

Australia Zoo is proud to be upholding Steve’s dream to protect and conserve these critically endangered Sumatran elephants. Steve designed Elephantaisa to fulfill this dream and Australia Zoo is continuing his mission to protect wildlife and wild places.

“If we can teach people about wildlife, they will be touched. Share my wildlife with me. Because humans want to save things that they love.”
