As Katrine Sporle explains, whilst the Property Ombudsman (TPO) has Codes of Practice, to which about 40,000 agents around the country are signed up, this is self-regulatory. Now there is a much greater call by the industry as a whole for compliance as well as enforcement to regulate estate agents, letting agents and residential leasehold managing agents.
As Katrine and Phil discuss, compliance can only work effectively if it has enforcement. Currently, there is no enforced regulation to protect buyers when buying a new home or if you rent directly from a landlord.
