Step foot into India, and you can’t help but notice all the different patterns and colours on Indian garments. Our daily Indian wear is truly part of our heritage and like no other in the world. Most of these are handmade - isn’t that incredible? Let’s find out the names of the different types of Indian prints you may have seen everyday: 1. Bandhani - This print has been doing the rounds since the Indus Valley Civilization and today draws its roots from Gujarat and Rajasthan.
2. Batik - In order to create patterns, the Batik method uses wax resist. This print is found in other countries too, like places in the Middle East and Asia (popularly in Indonesia).
3. Bagru Print - The Bagru print is one of the most celebrated block-printing techniques in the world! It takes decades for one to become a master in this field.
4. Kalamkari - In Persian, Kalamkari means “the art of drawing with a pen”. Coloured with natural dye, artisans and storytellers in ancient India would immortalise their works on cloth using this method.
5. Ikat - Have you heard of tie-dye? Well, Ikat is the mother of the tie-dye method. Ikat cloth’s characteristic is its blurry pattern. However, the less blurry the pattern, the more expensive it is!
