Lag: You can't escape it, so how do we deal with it?

Lag: You can't escape it, so how do we deal with it? Lag. The bane of every gamer. It's unavoidable. So how can we adjust our playstyle and what can we do to deal with it?

Lag is the result of high ping. Let's go over what ping is. Note that this is a highly generalized and simple explanation; it does not go into the minutiae of networking.

The way ESO works is that your computer sends an information packet to the ESO server. The server then reads that input and produces the appropriate outcome. That outcome is then sent back to your computer and you see the outcome on your screen. The time it takes for this to happen is called ping. The higher the ping, the longer it takes for that trip to happen.

A (very simple) way to think of this is a delivery driver. The input is the package, while the route it takes can be the path it needs to take to get to your house and back. High ping can be caused by obstructions in the route causing the driver to take a longer route, traffic along the route causing delays, or even just the route being long.

The first thing I would recommend doing is to slow down everything. Instead of trying to do a rotation as quickly as an end-game player, slow down your button presses. Figure out the fastest you can go without losing any inputs to high ping. Once you have that, practice going at that speed to maximize your overall DPS. While you may not get to those very high levels of DPS, you'll be able to get to very good levels of DPS, even with high ping with this method.

The second thing to consider is to use a virtual private network, or a VPN. VPN services can cost only a few dollars (or whatever currency you may use) a month, and may be able to help alleviate your ping issues. While not a guarantee, it is something worth trying. Many services have free trials, so you can test to see whether using a VPN reduces or stabilizes your ping.

Unfortunately, there's not a ton of things you can do on your end to address lag. The most surefire way to address it would be to get a new ISP, but that can be expensive and is often not an option. So the best thing to do is to adjust your rotation speed and expectations to deal with the lag. Plenty of players are able to hit high number with high ping because they have learned to tailor their rotations around that ping. I was in that position in the past; I simply had to learn how to adjust my rotations to deal with the high ping that I had.
