Thought is just a very very tiny aspect of the infinite divine consciousness that you are, you have forgotten your real nature, You have forgotten your true identity as the divine peaceful consciousness and got trapped in the thoughts, in the patterns of the thinking mind, so you have started taking your mind as your identity,
So now when your mind creates negative thoughts about a neutral situation, You take those thoughts as the absolute truth and you suffer, you forget the that all situations are neutral, it is our opinion, it is our judgement that make a situation Pleasant or unpleasant, and since you identify with thoughts, you immediately believe what it says, forgetting that it is only a perspective that the mind is giving you about the situation but you take it to be the absolute truth and this makes you undergo untold suffering!
