The animal kingdom truly is amazing. They come in all shapes and sizes, big and small, but never let their sizes fool you. Some massive animals are pushovers compared to smaller ones, strength wise. Today, we will be taking a look at 10 abnormally strong animals in the world. Number one is definitely a surprise so stay tuned.
Number 10. The Grizzly Bear
These massive, brown-haired predators have a reputation as one of nature’s most formidable killing machines. Standing up to 8 feet tall and weighing 800 pounds, these fierce mammals have captivated—and frightened—humans for centuries. But are they abnormally strong? Well, they are. Otherwise, they won’t make it to this list.
On average, a normal sized grizzly can carry 0.8 times their own bodyweight. Now, that may not seem much to you, but if you consider that an average male grizzly weighs 400 pounds, that translates into it being able to carry more than 1100 pounds easily. In fact, grizzlies are so strong that, if they choose to, they are able to climb trees.
This massive strength also allows the grizzly to propel their massive, heavy bodies to great speeds. Grizzlies have been clocked running at 35 miles per hour. To put it in perspective, that is actually faster than Usain Bolt’s 27.78 mile per hour run, which mind you, he can only sustain for a few seconds.
Number 9. The Elephant
When it comes to feats of strength from the animal kingdom, no strongest animal list will be complete without the mighty elephant. Although it may come as a surprise to you that they only occupy the ninth slot in this list, there is a perfectly good reason for that; we’re not literally counting how much weight each animal can carry, we’re looking at how much they can carry in relation to their body weight. With that said, no one is taking away the fact that the elephant is the strongest land animal on earth, and that’s for all the elephant fan boys out there.
African elephants can weigh as much as 14,000 pounds and they can carry up to 20,000 pounds, that’s almost 1.5 times their own body weight, or the approximate weight of 130 adult humans.
Not only strong, elephants are smart, social and incredibly strong creatures. An Elephants trunk is so powerful and precise that it can carry calves and also be used for more delicate acts like picking flowers!
Number 8. The Musk Ox
Have you ever heard of the old saying “as strong as an ox”? There is a basis for that you know, and it’s the animal occupying the number eight spot on our list.
The Musk is a large and incredible creature that survive in the brutal conditions of the arctic tundra. These mammals are often compared to cattle such as the very furry highland cow, yet musk ox are actually related more closely to sheep and goats. The musk ox lives in the arctic tundra regions of North America and Greenland. Although the musk ox was wiped out of Europe and Alaska due to over-hunting, they have been successfully reintroduced since then.
They have a large shoulder hump and a bulky build. These mammals average at about 1.2 meters tall and between 1.9 and 2.3 meters in length. The males weigh anywhere between 200kg and 400kg whereas females weigh between 150kg and 200kg. So male musk oxen tend to be much larger than the females.
And if size is any indicator of strength, then one look at this animal should give you an impression of its strength. A single ox can pull or carry up to 900 kgs. That’s 1.5 times their body weight.
Number 7. The Tiger
The largest species of cat in the world, tigers are powerful hunters with sharp teeth, strong jaws and agile bodies. They range across Asia from Russia all the way to the Sumatra and Indochina. Researchers still have much to learn about these beautiful, critically endangered, solitary cats.
There is currently one recognized species of tiger, Panthera tigris. Scientists have further classified the tiger into nine subspecies: the extinct Bali, Caspian and Javan subspecies, and the living Malayan, Sumatran, South China, Indochinese, Bengal and Amur, or Siberian, subspecies.
