Alert Today,Alive Tomorrow | 31st road safety week | A short movie on road safety Despite road safety measures being taken up by Odisha government under Supreme Court-monitored supervision, the road fatalities continue to rise with the State losing 18,683 lives in past four years.

According to information furnished in the State Assembly, in the first nine month of the current year 4,115 road accident deaths have already been reported.

In 2018, number of accident deaths on road had breached 5000-marks for the first time. As many as 5,315 persons had lost their lives under wheels. In 2017 and 2016, accident deaths were 4,790 and 4,463 respectively.

With the surging economy, vehicle population expanded in the country during the last one decade. Though road networks also improved, mounting pressure on roads from expanded vehicle population has aggravated safety issues.  Credible data about road accidents are not available, still, preliminary reports indicate that Indian roads are witnessing higher incidence of accidents. As per the Supreme Court appointed Committee on road safety, nearly 150000 people die in road accidents in the country every year. Another 5 to 7 lakh people are believed to be injured, leading to handicapped status. Government has made several efforts to enhance road safety in recent years. A major one was the appointment of the Committee on Road Transport and Traffic Management (Sundar Committee, 2007).

The central as well as the state governments are celebrating road safety week every year to promote and propagate awareness among general public.

By obeying traffic rules we can decrease the rate of road accidents as well as safe lives and properties.
