If We Say We Have No Sin...

If We Say We Have No Sin... 1 John 1:8 is often used to “prove” that we cannot be free from sin in this life. The verse says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” It appears, at first glance, to be an easy verse to understand, doesn’t it? But is this passage saying that Jesus does not deliver from all sin (including its penalty, pollution and power) in this world? I hope to demonstrate that this is not what John was saying. In order to understand 1:8, we need to look at the context in which John said these words. As the saying goes, “a text used out of context is often a pretext.”
