Atherosclerosis is a disease of tunica intima of the large elastic vessels. There are a few risk factors associated with atherosclerosis.
Some of them are proven to cause atherosclerosis, and the others are suspicions only.
In this video, Dr. Mobeen Syed explains that out of all the proven factors, some factors are non-modifiable. These non-modifiable factors include gender, age, and genetic makeup.
Men have more incidence of atherosclerosis than premenopausal women. However, postmenopausal women and men have an equal probability of developing atherosclerosis.
It is interesting to note that estrogen in the premenopausal women is responsible for reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. But surprisingly, the administration of estrogen after menopause increases the risk of atherosclerosis.
In the full video, Dr. Mobeen Syed also discusses some modifiable factors that affect the risk of atherosclerosis. These include cholesterol, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and homocysteine.
There are a few possible factors that are yet to be proven to cause atherosclerosis. These include obesity, stress, physical activity, and estrogen.
The following topics have discussed in the full video:
* Definition of atherosclerosis
* Modifiable risk factors of atherosclerosis
* Non-modifiable risk factors of atherosclerosis
* Inconclusive risk factors of atherosclerosis
