Bushfire royal commission to probe national response to hazard reduction

Bushfire royal commission to probe national response to hazard reduction A nationwide approach to hazard reduction burns and the threat of climate change will be examined by a royal commission into the bush fire crisis.

The inquiry draft terms pinpointed the need to “prevent, respond and mitigate” future fires.

Labor called for a separate senate inquiry which has been refused on the basis it would “needlessly duplicate the efforts of other inquiries”.

Labor MP Anika Wells described the government’s focus on back-burning as an “ideological bent” that prioritised hazard reduction over emissions reduction.
