How to Publish MORE & BETTER Articles by Writing LESS (Or NOT Writing at All)

How to Publish MORE & BETTER Articles by Writing LESS (Or NOT Writing at All) Do you want to be a writer or a publisher? It's an important distinction and very important business decision. Can you do both? Yes, you can. BUT you don't have to write in order to publish a successful niche content site or a blog. I step you through how I transitioned from writing all content on my site to now being a successful full-fledged publisher.

Presentation Text:

Fat Stacks Reader Steve Emails Me and Says:
“Great email Jon.”
“I’m reluctant to hand research over to someone else as it feels like I’m giving up a lot of the control on my site, but it’s really the next big hurdle I need to overcome. Any thoughts?”

You have to let go
You are NOT the best writer for your website. There are experts who know more and write better.
You have to be willing to pay for it.
Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post - he doesn’t write articles. He’s the owner/publisher.
SOME content does NOT need to be perfect. Just better than what else is online:

Better than the other sites...
“Two guys are in the jungle when they see a lion running towards them. Frantically, one of the men starts putting on his running shoes.
Surprised, the other man says ” What are you thinking, you can’t outrun a lion!!!”
“I don’t have to outrun the lion,” said the man, ” I just have to outrun you.”

Exception (if this is you, stop listening now)
This entire presentation assumes you want to scale by publishing more content.
Scaling isn’t the only model.
There are many successful bloggers who write every word because their publication is all them.
If you are the publication, don’t outsource. Keep doing what you’re doing.

If you outsource - don’t publish garbage
That said, don’t publish GARBAGE.
Pay a rate that the article requires.
You’re the publisher - you decide how many resources topics need.
If you hire an editor/content strategist, it’s their job.
Typically, well-written content performs better because it’s natural, unique, engaging, etc.

Good writing formula =
Research (many sources) +
Opinionated +
Thorough +
Unique voice (personable, interesting, funny, snarky, etc.)
NOT: Regurgitated stuff already online. Instead, takes ideas/facts and makes something unique.

Back to Steve’s concern
Steve’s concern is outsourcing without compromising quality.
What Steve is really concerned about is doing so without spending much money.
That’s the problem we all face. We want Pulitzer prize-winning content for a pauper’s price.
Solutions...

Give detailed instructions
If you pay $.02/word, no amount of instructions will result in a good article.
If you pay $.06 to $.10 per word, with detailed instructions and an outline, you will very likely get something outstanding for most topics.
Every minute you invest in outlines and instructions will yield many times over benefit to your content.
When you pay these rates, be discerning. Read the returned article. Don’t be afraid to require revisions.

Invest in expertise
If your topic/niche requires expertise, seek it out.
TIP: A 2 week delay in finding the right writer(s) will not hurt your site. You need a writer with a combination of expertise and writing chops.
Where to find these experts?
Universities/Technical Schools
WriterAccess
Craigslist

Writing relationships make your life easier
I have established relationships with several writers on WriterAccess. I send them direct orders. I don’t have to give instructions because they know what to do.
Same with in-house writers.
This is where you want to get to, especially writing agencies. Instruct once, receive great content forever.
