Lesson 5 The Subject Verb Agreement Part 2【主語と動詞の一致】これって単数形?複数形? The Subject Verb Agreement is a part of the Basic Grammar in English. It has rules. If you're already familiar with the rules, you will do well in English tests especially in the parts of Reading and Writing.

So, let's study the last 10 rules and try to familiarize ourselves with them.

The Subject Verb Agreement (SVA)
11. Pronouns like "few," "many," "several," "both," "all" and "some" take the plural form.
12. When "some," "any," "half," "most" and "all" are followed by a prepositional phrase, the object of the preposition determines the form of the verb.
13. If a gerund (v-ing) or an infinitive (to+verb) comes as a subject, the verb will always be singular. When they are joined by "and," they take the plural form.
14. Collective nouns are usually regarded as singular subjects.
15. Titles of books, movies, novels and the like take a singular verb.
16. Nouns that have two parts such as scissors, shorts, eyeglasses, etc. take a plural verb. If these words are preceded by "a pair of," they require singular verbs.
17. When "none" is used with a prepositional phrase starting with "of," the subject can be both singular and plural.
18. Nouns such as mathematics, politics, economics, news, etc. require singular verbs.
19. "A number of + noun" is a plural subject and takes a plural verb while "The number of + noun" is a singular subject and takes a singular verb.
20. If "the + an adjective" appears as the subject of a sentence, it will be plural and takes the plural form of the verb.
