1. Find out if your medicine falls under the Opium Act
Ask your pharmacist or doctor if your medication is covered by the Opium Act. You can also see for yourself whether the active substances in your medicine fall under the Opium Act. Are your medicines (or components thereof) not listed in the Opium Act? Then you can take this with you on your journey. Always take these medicines in the original packaging. Then it is clear that it is a medicine and not drugs.
2. The Schengen statement or medical statement?
If your medicine (or that of your child) falls under the Opium Act, you need a statement. There are two types of explanation:
Schengen declaration: for travel within the Schengen zone.
Medical certificate: for all other countries.
3. Request a statement
Make sure you start your application on time. On the website of the Central Administration Office (CAK), you can find out which declaration is required for each country. You can also download the application form there, which your doctor must then sign. You can then send the completed form to the CAK. The CAK then needs another 4 weeks to have your statement ready.
Medication passport does not count as a statement
The medicine passport (also known as a medicine passport or European Medical Passport) is not valid as a medical certificate. The medicine passport contains all the medicines that you use or for which you are hypersensitive. This is useful if you visit a pharmacy or doctor abroad. You can request a passport from your pharmacy or (family) doctor.
Tips
Start your application on time: at least 4 weeks before departure.
Take medicine with you in the original packaging.
You will find answers to other questions (costs, validity, transit) on the website of the CAK.
