Commonwealth Games budget blowout avoided by ignoring ‘gold-plated solutions’

Commonwealth Games budget blowout avoided by ignoring ‘gold-plated solutions’ Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has revealed he managed to pay for key Commonwealth Games infrastructure by ordering his staff to forget about “gold-plated solutions”.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News host Alan Jones, Mr Tate said he avoided blowing the councils budget by finding savings in even the smallest of projects.

“We cut out a lot of middle ground management and collapsed eight departments down to five and the other thing I said to all the boys was forget about gold-plated solutions

“They wanted to build a five-metre footpath when three and a half metres would do.

“We want to deliver frontline services at a price we can afford.”
