The Rode VideoMic NTG is a hybrid microphone that brings some great features of the Rode NTG professional lineup of shotgun mics, meanwhile having a compact and on-the-go form factor of Video Mic. Hence, you get the best of both worlds here.
The Rode VideoMic NTG is a condenser microphone with highly directional super-cardioid polar pattern. This is ideal for taking voice-overs and vlogging since most of the audio is receiving from the talent (presenter) itself.
As the title suggests, this is ideal Audio equipment (microphone) for someone planning to make YouTube videos. The types of the video include explanation video like we do here, a Vlog type of Video, and Live streaming of games and events.
Since it has lots of onboard controls, its idea for all the scenarios I mentioned above. You get features like a high-pass filter that cuts of rumbles, bass, HVAC, and other forms of ambient noises. This feature could be ideal for someone who records indoor with noise coming from AC or lights.
There’s also a feature called high-frequency boost that could be crucial for someone who is recording a video in events where the talent/presenter wants his voice to be boosted against the noise coming out from elsewhere.
Another feature you might like about the VideoMic NTG is a safety channel. This nifty feature records a separate channel at 20dB quieter on the right channel, which can be used as a backup in case the main channel suffers from clipping i.e. too loud and distorted.
Talking about the audio quality, it's really good with rich sound as compared to last-gen Rode Video Mic Pro. Dynamic range is also fantastic for a microphone that costs just US$250. Battery life is quite good too with 30 hours of continuous recording.
You can also use the Type C to Type-A cable to plug the VideoMic NTG into a computer, tablet, or a smartphone. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack with Autosensing TRRS output. So, you can connect it to a phone with 3.5mm TRRS input or a camera with a 3.5mm TRS input.
You can buy the TRS Male to TRS Female extender for around $20 if you the distance between the camera and the VideoMic NTG is significant.
With so many features, the Rode VideoMic NTG is an excellent microphone for amateurs. If you want a professional setup, you can get a more expensive Rode VideoMic NTG5 with XLR output. However, you do need to invest more in the pre-amp with XLR output that will cost an additional $200. With VideoMic NTG, you are getting similar audio output with less hassle.
