There are three types of roofing systems commonly used in the USA. They are EPDM Rubber, TPO (Thermo Plastic), and Modified Bitumen Torch Down. The most so popular right now is EPDM Rubber. EPDM Rubber is the same material as that of an inner tube of a car tire. The issues with EPDM are the adhesives that break down during extreme heat, and the seams come apart.
TPO is a better roof system than EPDM. The seams are welded together, and they will not come apart. TPO is a thin viny; type of material and can last up to 20 years. The ultraviolet rays will deteriorate TPO over time, and after 20 years, you will have to replace the roof.
Modified Bitumen Torch Down is also a single-ply membrane. This rubber membrane is much thicker than that of EPDM or TPO.
What makes a Torch Down Rubber stand out from the other roof systems is that it can be installed over almost any other roof system. No need to tear down any roof. As long as the surface is fairly even, you can install a Torch Down Rubber.
What makes it even better, if you add a second layer of torch down and fuse the 2 layers together with a torch, now you will have a roof that is indestructible.
