Rail joints allow for thermal expansion and contraction. For this to happen the joints need to be lubricated, fishplate bolts set to the correct torque and the gaps correctly set. If the joints are set too wide, defects such as rail end batter and dipped joints may occur. If the gaps are closed up the rail will not be able to expand safely increasing the risk of a track buckle. Incorrectly regulated joints occur due to rail creep. This can be caused by trains breaking or accelerating. Closed gaps can also occur at the bottom of steep inclines, with wide joints at the top. Areas where there are fastenings with low toe load (i.e. Elastic Spikes, Panlock keys) are also susceptible as the rails can move with continued train movements.
