Fast & Simple method to re-wax your wax jacket or garments

Fast & Simple method to re-wax your wax jacket or garments Waxed Jackets like those from Barbour, Belstaff, Fjallraven and Drizabone are famous for keeping your dry and keeping the wind out, but for them to keep water and windproof, and to extend the life of these expensive items they need to be rewaxed - or 'reproofed' - preferably once a year.

You can send them off to the maker, but another option is to re wax them yourself - and it's easier than you think.
This video show what you'll need to make re waxing a breeze, and the methods I use to get a fantastic result, everytime.

I recommend the following items.
Small hotplate or burner - though you can use the kitchen hob
Small saucepan half filled with water
Tin of re proofing wax
Old Sponge
protective gloves
something to protect the surface you're going to be resting on.
Heat gun or a hairdryer.

I gave myself a day from start to finish, it's better if you dont rush, and have a nice warm place to hang the garment afterwards to allow the wax to penetrate fully.

Brush your garment to get rid of any loose dirt and wipe with a damp cloth to get rid of any stains. Let the garment dry - preferably in a warm place like an airing cupboard - or Sydney on a 28 degree day.

Open up your wax and set it in the pan, bring the water up to a slow simmer and wait for the wax to fully melt - should take about 10 - 15 minutes so maybe grab a brew and a choccy biscuit.

Pop on your gloves and carefully move the wax to the table you'll be using.

Dip in your sponge and swipe across your garment, try to spread the wax as evenly as possible, but don't miss the seams and stitching. ESPECIALLY around the neck, shoulders, elbow and under the arms as this is where the garment 'wears' fastest.

Be careful around stitched badges like those on Barbour pockets, as they can absorb the wax and look a bit 'greasy' my advice is give them a miss and go back at the end to go around them with a cotton bud if you feel the material around them needs wax.

Finish waxing the whole garment and maybe grab another brew and a second biscuit while you let the wax penetrate - I left it an hour or so.

Check the garment for where theres wax build up - give it a wipe if needed or apply more wax if you feel you missed a spot.

Now carefully run your heat gun or hairdryer over the wax, let it get quiet hot as this will allow the wax to spread and even out as well as penetrating the material.

Once your done, hang the garment or bag up and leave over night, preferably in a warm place again.
